Prepare for Frozen Pipes!

SERVPRO of Central Lancaster provides water damage restoration services due to severe cold snaps and broken pipes. In cold climates, pipes have the potential to freeze. Should a pipe burst, this can lead to a major water damage event. When the temperature drops, it is recommended that you check for signs of a pipe issue. These warning signs include:
- Frosted pipes
- No running water or low water pressure
- Odd noises from an ice buildup in the pipe
- Wet marks in areas of your home that can signify a water leak
To help prevent a frozen pipe, open your outdoor hose bibs to remove any excess water before it freezes. Shut off the outdoor water valves.
Set your thermostat at a consistent temperature and insulate areas that are more prone to the cold such as the attic. Exposed pipes should also be insulated.
During drastically cold weather, cabinet doors can be left open to help allow more warm air to reach the pipes. Open your faucet to allow water to slowly drip, preventing the water from freezing. Should you discover a frozen pipe, you can use a heating pad to thaw the pipe. Additional assistance may be needed.
